Second Vermont Cynic editor chosen for USA Today correspondent role

Cynic news editor Becky Hayes

For the second year in a row, a Vermont Cynic editor has been chosen as a USA Today college correspondent.

Cynic news editor Becky Hayes, a junior from Hannover, Mass., this month began writing for USA Today College, an online enterprise that provides news tailored for college students nationwide.

Her first stories have touched on the phenomenon of college grads returning to their parents’ homes after graduation and colleges’ increased use of texting to alert students to emergencies. Hayes relies on a mix of UVM and other sources to tell her stories.

Hayes follows former Cynic staffer Natalie DiBlasio as the USA Today correspondent for the Vermont and northern New England area. DiBlasio, the 2011 Cynic editor-in-chief, now works as a full-time USA Today staffer.

As Cynic news editor, Hayes directs the paper’s news coverage. This summer, in addition to writing for USA Today College, she works as a reporting intern for The Patriot Ledger, just south of Boston.
